Do you mean the English flag or the British flag? The English flag is the St Georges cross ie a red addition cross on a white background. The British flag, properly called the Union Flag or sometimes the Union Jack, is an amalgam of the flags of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
Flags in the early times had the function of rallying people in battle and showing them where their side was fighting and heading. So many flags had a 'signal' color like red to draw attention. That is also why the Danish flag is red. The white cross represents Christianity and can in similar form also be found in the flags of the other Scandinavian countries. Legend has it that the Danish flag fell out of the sky as a sign of Heaven during the battle of Lyndanisse, in 1219.

The danish flag plays a huge role in the danish culture. It is one of the only flags in the world with an official name, "Dannebrog". In 2010 Denmark has 18 official days where one flies the flag. They are each year determined by the Ministry of Justice. Besides that, one flies their flag at birthdays, death, weddings and so on. That makes the danish flag one the most prominent flags of the world, and it is probably the most used as well. Sorry for my bad English :-)
Unfortunately it is not the Danish flag, but a crusader flag. The flag in the Church is not only a flag, it is a Royal or a flag the government use, when there is something to celebrate in the Royal family or visiting from other states. All official buildings use it in that case.
The oldest flag still used by a nation, is the danish flag Dannebrog.
It is the oldest NATIONAL flag still in use - it is not the oldest flag.
Banquet is an English equivalent of the Danish word 'festmiddag'.
Swedish and Danish are similar because they both belong to the North Germanic branch of the Germanic language family. They share a common history and have influenced each other linguistically over time through interactions between the two countries. Additionally, both languages have similar grammar structures and vocabulary due to their close geographical proximity.
