THE GANGES RIVER

Being 2,525 km. long, Ganges is the longest river in India. 400 million people live in its basin. Its average discharge into the bay of Bengal of 42, 470 cubic meters / second is the second highest in the world, next only to Amazon. These facts themselves make the river very sacred.

WATER - IN HINDUISM

In Hinduism water symbolizes the semi voluntary force, which Vishnu represents. The semi voluntary force is the greatest assimilator of emotions. Thus, the ashes of dead people and clay Ganesha, which symbolizes unwanted emotions stored in the entire year, are immersed in water.

THE GANGES - IN HINDUISM

Ganga, originates from the matted hair of Shiva. Shiva resides in Kailasa. Gangotri, from where Ganges originates is close to Mt. Kailas. Because of this geographical fact, the belief in Ganges is very deep rooted in Hindu minds.

Thus, Hindus believe that Ganges is a short cut to Hindu gods.

Hindus believe that bathing in Ganges washes off their sins and enables them to attain Moksha.

Thus, the economic importance of Ganges, the sacredness of water in Hinduism and the origin of Ganges near Mt. Kailas make Ganges more sacred than any other river in India.
