If it has an external regulator. The orange wire comes out of the alternator, then is spiced-"T"- into another wire which still should be orange going to the regulator plug, and the other wire coming from the "T" should be an orange wire with a tracer that goes to the "no charge" light on the dash. The other wire coming from the light goes to the ignition switch.
un-bolt it, take the belt off, and then disconnect the wired connections, then reverse order to put the new on back in.
It is the wire that supplies the initial field current to the alternator from the battey. Once the alternator is rotating the field current will be provided by the diodes from the current produced by the alternator. excitor wire is usually wired through the charging indicator light.
You would probably toast the diodes in the alternator.
Either the alternator you installed is defective or you wired it incorrectly. Check the voltage at the battery with the engine idling. You should read from 13.5 to 15.5 volts with a digital DC volt meter.

That sounds like problem in the cluster. The high beam indicator is cross wired to the check engine light when it shouldn't be.

Some vehicles have an external voltage regulator which also controls the warning lamp circuit, some vehicles have a warning lamp relay and others may operate through a computor, all of which require a signal from the alternator. You either have a faulty regulator/relay/computor, A broken signal wire from alternator, alternator is incorrectly wired or a faulty/incorrect type of alternator
