The Siege of Petersburg was unlike any other battle in the Civil War. It has been compared to the trench warfare of the First World War, where the belligerent nations more-or-less wore each other out.
It lasted more than nine months, with no intervals. It nearly ruined Northern morale, causing Lincoln to fear that he would be voted out in the imminent General Election. But a siege was the only way to defeat Robert E.Lee and his unconquerable army of Northern Virginia by keeping them on the defensive.
Final victory at Petersburg was the justification of Grant's policy of ending the system of prisoner-exchange. This meant pure attrition - both sides taking heavy losses, but the Confederates running out of manpower first.
