How is the demand for energy related to population growth and industrialization?

The needs of a man can be divided into two that is basic needs and optional needs. The optional need depends on the lifestyle of an individual. The two main reasons which led to increase in the demand for energy is due to population growth and the per capita economic growth in the less developed countries. The population in the developing world is predicted to increase from its current value of four billion to over eight billion by the year 2050. Hence as the basic and optional needs of an individual's increases the demand for the energy also keeps on increases especially electricity.

The average person in less developed country consumes only one sixth of the energy consumed by an average person in Western Europe or Japan. Hence doubling of the per capita consumption in the less developed countries over the next 50 years would correspond to only a very modest degree of economic growth and also will lead to three fold increase in world's energy consumption.

Hence population Growth is related to Energy consumption.

Energy plays a major role in any type of industry as one or the other activity of an industry depends on Energy. The growth of heavy industries will lead to enormous increase in energy consumption compared to the growth of the light industries. As the population is growing and the per capita income rises the number of products required increases and the energy required for producing the products increases.

The per capita industrial Energy demand rises very rapidly at the onset of development, accounting for maximum energy use. The growth of the energy demand however, quickly declines and the energy demand in other sectors eventually takes a majority share of total end use in the other sectors eventually takes a majority of the share of total end use energy consumption.
