In a US Presidential election, the voters in each state cast votes for electors, who are political party representatives for their state. These electors meet after the election and cast ballots that determine the winner of the election. To win election, a candidate must win more than half of the total of all electoral votes (as of 2014, 270 out of 538). If no candidate wins enough electoral votes, the US House of Representatives elects the President (this has only occurred once, in 1824) and the Senate elects the Vice President.
In most cases, all of the electoral votes for a particular state go to the candidate who received the most votes in that state, even if only by a small margin. (Maine and Nebraska have modified this.)
