How is the engine removed on a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am with a 2.4l. Can it be done without a hoist to lift the the body?

Most FWD cars can still have the engine removed from the top....just as the old RWD cars. If it's an automatic trans unbolt the trans and the torque converter from the engine. Support the trans and leave it in the car. Most of the time it's easier to pull a 5 speed trans with the engine.....but you'll need to be able to tilt the engine quite a bit to clear everything as you pull it.
