For meat to be suitable for Jews, it must be kosher. First, it must come from a kosher animal, that is, an animal with cloven hooves that chews its cud. After slaughter, the meat must be salted to draw out residual blood. Coarse salt (called kosher salt) is used for this.
Finally, before consumption, the meat must not come in contact with milk or with anything contaminated with milk or milk products. So, no milk, butter or cream may be used as an ingredient in a meat dish or as an ingredient in anything served with a meat dish. Cheeseburgers are out, steak is not fried in butter, chicken is not served with cream sauce. A butter dish shouldn't even be on the same table as a meal that includes meat.
