The muscle tissue is modified to form layers that are perpendicular to each other. This allows the stomach to churn (peristalsis) in different directions so as to hasten the physical and chemical breakdown of foods.

the muscular layer of the stomach comprises of the circular and longitudinal muscle coat. this helps in effective churning of food with the gastric juices in the stomach. The longitudinal muscle coat is responsible for initiating peristaltic movements for propeeling food towards the duodenum. Moreover the muscular coat forms a channel along the lesser curvature joining the cardiac end of the stomach to the pyloric end known as the incisura angularis which is responsible for flow of fluids through the stomach.
