They have to be a metric bolt, possibly a 17mm

I just changed the thermostat on my 93 4.3 and the bolt is a metric size, unfortunately I don't remember what size it was, 12, 13, or 14 millimeter should cover it.
This is according to the make and model of your vehicle. Some are metric.
If you are referring to the tensioner pulley's nut size, it is usually a metric 15mm nut.
