The short answer is, "as long as you're showing symptoms, you're contagious."

The previous answer said that "bronchitis is a virus", which isn't entirely true. What I've found on the web says that acute bronchitis is initially triggered by a cold virus, but that the bronchitis is almost always an opportunistic bacterial infection. In other words, the antibiotics will help with bronchitis, but won't do anything for the head cold that brought it on.

If you must go out, cover your mouth when you cough or sneeze, and wash your hands often.

Bronchitis is considered a self-contained infection but in reality any time you cough you can spread disease of many types because the human cough droplets contain many types of bacteria and viruses. This is the same for sneezing. That is why it is so critical to cover your mouth with a handkerchief and to wash your hands 10 or more times a day when you are sick. Keep your area around you wiped down with antibacterial and antiviral wipes. If you have sick time available from work stay home until your cough is reduced significantly.

Bronchitis is a medical problem, concentrated in the bronchial tubes of the respiratory system. The mucous membrane of the bronchial tubes (or simply bronchi) is inflamed, thus affecting the air passage leading to the lungs. Depending upon the length of the illness episode, it can be acute or chronic bronchitis.

The term is somewhat generic in that it refers to irritation of the bronchi, no matter what the cause.

Acute bronchitis, caused mainly by viruses, is considered contagious for at least as long as there are symptoms.

Chronic forms of bronchitis caused by smoking, air pollution, or by long term inhalation of other bronchial irritants is not contagious at all.

Do the newest FDA approved antibiotics for bacterial infections help with pneumonia?

You should only use the antibiotics that are SPECIFIC to the bacteria. If this is a viral pneumonia, antibiotics will not work. Antibiotics only work on bacteria. Antivirals work on viruses and antifungals work on fungi. The thing with antibiotics is that some only work on some bacteria and not on others. A sputum culture should be done to see which microbe is causing the problem and then see which drug will do the job. It is much quicker to do it this way and safer, in the long run, for the patient.

What if you have pneumonia and antibiotics can't help you?

Viral pneumonia is a serious condition, precisely because antibiotics do not kill viruses. The treatment is support in hospital, pulmonary therapy, and a long recovery. Good luck.

What do horses do when they have the flu?

When horses get the Equine Influenza, they have many of the same symptoms as people do when they get the types of flu that humans can catch. It attacks the respiratory system, and they get runny noses, coughs and snorting, they get fevers, and can suffer a secondary case of viral or bacterial pneumonia, like people have when they get complications of influenza. It is highly contagious and can take the animals as long as months to fully get over the disease. Farmers will usually put the horse in the stables to let it get plenty of a rest and watch them closely for trouble breathing. They may need treatment with antibiotics if they get bacterial pneumonia on top of the viral flu infection. Donkeys and mules can also contract equine influenza.

How long do bronchitis germs live outside the body?

AnswerBronchitis is in the bronchial and in the lungs and MUST be treated with antibiotics before it turns into a humdinger of a case of pneumonia. Bronchitis is not contagious. I use to suffer from Bronchitis for 10 years and could count on it for each of those years. Antibiotics knocked it right out of me. When I went into menopause I ceased getting Bronchitis. It is HIGHLY contagious actually!Bronchitis is caused usually by bacterial or viral infections. However, it is contagious and can also be caused just by being in touch with the infected person. Second hand smoke can even result in accumulation of irritants in the air passage which in turn can result in bronchitis. Is Bronchitis contagious? It is extremely true. It is contagious disease. The virus can transfer the disease when you sneeze or cough. In the initial stage, there is a swelling in the air passage. At this time, there is no formation of virus. When the bacteria released by the patients through sneeze and cough spreads through the air, the disease gets spread to others around. The infected person should consult a physician immediately and get medicines. Otherwise it leads to pneumonia too. Both the types of Bronchitis are contagious. The viral infection is powerful and it may affect the healthy people around through indirect and direct contacts.

How do doctors treat a patient with a bacterial infection?

Most bacterial infections are treatable because most bacteria are susceptible to antibiotics. i.e. Antibiotics kill the bacteria without killing the patient. The other common form of infections, viruses are much harder to "kill" without harming the patient. Antiviral drugs are making progress but they still have a long way to go before they are as effective as antibiotics.

How long should you stay out of school if you have pneumonia?

How long are viral infections contagious?

Every virus is different. Some are infectious for only a couple of days; some are infectious until after your body has been buried. Some may be infectious for longer than that; bodies of the victims of the 1917 influenza strain have recently been exhumed, and were discovered to STILL be dangerous.
