The effects of the radiation poisoning is still being studied. The Manhattan Project people predicted it would take 50 years for that area to be safe again. It is over sixty years now and people still have trouble there. The sad thing was that the city was leveled by a monsoon within a month or so. So the rain spread the radiation poison further. There are still people who are sick from the radiation. The city was rebuilt quickly and people lived there not understanding radiation poison. See the related link below for further information.
