They should be removed from the incubator within 4 to 8 hours of hatching (when they are dry). They shouldn't be left in the incubator for more than 12 hours after hatching.

When you remove them from the incubator, they need to be placed in a dry brooder (you can make your own out of wood and cardboard, though a professional one is always better) with a heat lamp at 35 degrees C. The temperature of the lamp should be decreased by about 3 or 4 degrees a week.

If you only have one duckling, you would also need to give it some attention and love. Ducks are social creatures and will die of heartache if they are alone. A good way to provide social interaction with a lone duckling is to allow it to sleep under a towel on your lap or shoulder for a few minutes. If you are a male, you can grow a beard and allow the lone duckling to curl up underneath it - this sounds silly but what you are doing is replicating the effects of a duckling huddling under its mothers wings for warmth and protection.

Ducks are known to be "nest leavers", soon after all the eggs have hatched the mother will lead the ducklings away and they will not go back to it.

Mallard duck nesting on about 17 duck eggs and 3 chicken eggs should remove the baby chicks from her when hatched so she will stay on the duck eggs until they hatch?

:: Answer place here (by supervisor) from discussion page;: That is way to many eggs for one duck to hatch. 8-12 is about the largest number of eggs for a nest. The mother will more than likely leave the duck eggs when most of the chicks hatch. I am not sure if you remove the chicks if she will stay sitting each duck is different. Some will stay with the nest to try to hatch the rest of the eggs but other will leave the nest completely. If it were me I would decide now which I wanted most, the ducklings or the chicks. : When ever you mess with a ducks nest she can give up on the nest and not hatch any of them after she has been sitting.

How long after wild baby ducks hatch will they leave the nest for good?

Baby mallards are very active and because they are born with downy feathers, they will leave the nest as soon as possible. This usually takes from 10 to 24 hours. Until the babies are between 50 and 60 days old, they will continue to return to the nest.
