According to some commercial VA loan companies, you have to wait for 2 years after your discharge to start the process. As soon as you can find a willing lender/bank/mortgage company after that time. You will have to improve your credit, which may take a few years.

Can I move if I have 16 percent intertest in a house that I inheritate while filing chapter 7?

Filing a Chapter 7 does not prevent you from moving. You have to notify all the creditors, the trustee and the court of the change of address, by motion (see local rules for any specifics or consult a local bankruptcy lawyer). The inheritance will have to be added to the assets listed in Schedule A, with the value of the 16 percent equity, again by motion with copies to all the above.I recommend using a lawyer to do it right.

Can you get financed for a mortgage if you are a first-time home buyer but filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy?

Yes, if it's has been more than 2 yrs. since your bankruptcy and you've paid all your current bills on time.AnswerI am a mortgage banker and I've made helping people with bankruptcies my specialty. I'd like to correct the person who posted above me, for an FHA loan you must wait 2 years after discharge. But you do NOT have to wait 2 years, you can actually qualify for up to 100% financing 1 day after a discharge of your bankruptcy, literally a single day out of discharge. You can also qualify for a loan while you are still in a chapter 13 re-payment program as little as 1 year from your filing date. You don't have to wait until your chapter 13 is paid off to get a loan or refinance your existing one and the best part is that you can payoff your chapter 13 balance during the refinance using equity from your property.

Is it good to have a lot of debt for chapter 13 Can I try to pay some down myself first?

Do not try to pay any debts down if you are going to file Chapter 13. By filing, you stop all interest and late fees, and all creditors will be treated the same. You risk having the trustee go after the money you paid because it was a preference. If you have a credit card you would like to be able to continue using, and it has a small balance (under $600), you can try, but filing bankruptcy terminates every credit card contract - read it.
