Without a host a fleas life is only a few days.
(When provided a host for ample food their life can span over 100 days.)
Adult fleas cannot survive very long without an animal host, but flea eggs and larvae can live for many many months in carpets, between floorboards and possibly down the cracks of sofas. If you believe you have a flea infestation, be sure to treat all the furniture with a vacuum cleaner and flea spray.
Pubic lice can live less than a day without a human host.

The "Life Cycle" describes the various stages a flea goes through during it's life. The adult flea is one of the four stages of fleas. Beginning with the flea egg, the life cycle continues through three instars of larval development and into the more dormant pupal stage where the flea larvae are transformed into adult fleas. The egg, larva, pupa and adult comprises what is known as complete metamorphosis. However, the "Life Span" tells us how long a flea can live. As long as 2 years. One year without water. These are extremes and not the normal lifespan. A flea might live a year and a half under ideal conditions. These include the right temperature, food supply, and humidity. Generally speaking, though, an adult flea only lives for 2 or 3 months. Without a host for food, a flea's life might be as short as a few days. But with ample food supply, the adult flea will often live up to 100 days. This information is available in the Library of Congress.http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/flea.html
If you are asking if a virus can live very long without its host, then no. Viruses aren't alive in the first place. Because viruses can't reproduce on their own, they are not considered living organisms. Because they aren't living to begin with, they cannot die.
30-90 Days (Average). A flea might live a year and a half under ideal conditions. These include the right temperature, food supply, and humidity. fleas can live several months without a host to feed upon (such as a pet). They are able to create a cocoon to hibernate in until they feel a host is available. also 50% of a flea population is eggs and they can take several months to hatch. the best way to get rid of fleas in the home is by using an insect growth regulator (igr). see related links for info about igrs
Generally vets recommend you cover a pet in suds(to prevent breathing for the fleas) for ten minutes. I don't know how long they can technically live without oxygen, but I know it's gotta be less than that as per most vet recommendations.
You should consult a veterinarian about this, as it does vary depending on where you are. If fleas have taken up residence in your house, as they often do -- they particularly like clean houses with hardwood floors -- you may have to keep your cat on flea medicine all year for several years. Fleas can survive for a long time without visiting the host cat.
as long as you want~!
Tapeworms can live in a host for 5-10 years.
