Well that really depends. When I first arrived in Germany I was allowed to stay six months with my girlfriend of the time. I enrolled myself in a German classes so that I would be able to learn the language and it allowed me stay for an extra six months. I would not plan on going to Germany without a job though because once you are in the country you will need to register yourself with the gov. if you would like a apt or something like that.
