Normally high fat products go rancid because of oxidation, but chocolate contains flavonoids that hinder oxidation. According to ShelfLifeAdvice.com, unmelted chocolate can last anywhere from 18 months to 2 years, but I've found that the powdered form loses its taste before that time.

Taste some and see if the taste is still as expected and you should be able to make a decision on whether you want to use it.

Cocoa beans that have been fermented and dried can be stored out of sunlight in low humidity storage for up to a year. They can then be roasted and stored in the same conditions for another year then ground into cocoa liquor and stored several years in low temperature storage. You may be surprised that some of the chocolate you eat comes from cocoa pods that were harvested 5 or 10 years ago. That is why chocolacau.com recommends that you buy from a farmer so you know when the cocoa was harvested and how long it took to get from the tree to your mouth.
