Do girl gerbils and boy gerbils get along?

Yes they get along, but should you put them together? NO, gerbils do well in groups, 3-4 for males and pairs for females. Females are the top in wild gerbil clans, and the head female will fight with other females to keep her place (so if daughter wants to see her boyfriend she got to leave), and males will fight to be the top male to get breeding rights with the female. Don't mix boys and girls together you will have a ton of babies that you can't find homes for, and possibly lead to inbreeding, and them winding up as snake food

Can gerbils have babies in captivity?

Absolutely. A male and female gerbil kept together in a cage will reproduce at a rate of about one litter (usually 3 - 7 babies) per month.Gerbils are very friendly and social animals, and don't like living alone. It is best to keep two to four of them together, as space allows. However, unless you want to be overwhelmed with baby gerbils, you should keep the sexes separate, i.e., choose to keep only females, or only males.Gerbils will generally accept new cage-mates only when they are young. If you have an older gerbil, do not attempt to introduce other gerbils to the cage, as these otherwise gentle rodents will aggressively defend their territory, even to the death.

Can you keep gerbils in pairs?

Yes, you can keep same sex gerbils in pairs if they are littermates and have grown up together without having been separated.

If I don't want any more gerbils can I separate the mother with the female babies and the father with the male babies?

Yes, you can after the pups are weaned (around 5 weeks of age). However, it is recommended not to keep more than 2 females together in one tank, and no more than 3 males in one tank, as gerbils can get territorial, even with daughters and litter mates after a while. However, if you have not yet separated mom and dad, the mother is probably already pregnant again, as the mother gerbil will mate again shortly after birth.

Do you keep the father gerbil in with the mother and babies?

I would advise against it, male gerbils occasionally eat offspring.

One of your females dwarf hamsters is pregnant should you keep her with your other 2 females?

If you want to. But if you do they MIGHT kill the babies or take over and care for the other hamster's babies.

I bought what i thought were 2 female gerbils but now they have started mating what should i do?

The same thing happened to me, I bought 2 female gerbils from the pet store and then found babies in the cage one morning. Check online pictures of male and female gerbil genitalia so you can determine which one is the male. You need to put the male in a separate cage or they will keep mating and making more babies. Gerbils mate again right after the babies are born, so you might end up with another litter even after you separate them. Keep them separate unless you want to breed them, or you will end up with a ton of gerbils! Here's a link to find pics of the gerbils genitalia: http://www.gerbils.co.uk/gerbils/gender.htm

Can you put to female gerbils in with new pups?

Gerbil mothers should be kept either alone with their pups or with the father and the pups. NEVER put two females together if one is pregnant or nursing, as the other female will most likely get defensive and kill the litter. This goes even for gerbils who get along really well. The only instance you can keep two females in with a litter is if the other pup is a female from the previous litter.

Can you keep a male and female gerbil together and wil they mate a lot?

This is not reccomended. One time my sister looked after the school gerbils who were thought to be both female, during the summer holidays i saw one gerbil in a corner with a big blur of pink, i called my mum and we looked in the cage, only to find that she had given birth to a litter of 6 baby gerbils. This was dangerous to keep the boy gerbil in as he would eat the babies and both parents would attack each other, so we had to separate them. DO NOT TOUCH BABIES as the mother won't recognise their scent and will abandon them. So in response to your question, it is best to keep gerbils together, 2 females is a good combination as males fight over the alpha roll, but it is a bad decision to put a male and female together.

How long do you keep the male away from the females babies?

Um... At least a month and a half. If the male is showing signs of aggression toward the babies you should keep the male in a separate cage.

Can mom and dad and babies be in the cage together?
