MacArthur graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point in 1901, and retired in 1935 after serving the previous four years as Chief of Staff. This was twice as long as an officer usually held the top spot. There was nowhere to go but out, since he had ascended to the top and stayed there longer than could have been expected. Franklin Roosevelt was president, and the two did not enjoy a very warm relationship, nor have unlimited respect for each other. After retirement MacArthur took a job as Field Marshal of the Philippine Army. MacArthur's first posting in 1901 as a new officer had been to the Philippines, where a minor war was underway, and where his father was military governor. As a child MacArthus had also lived some years in the Philippines, where his father was on duty. In 1940 MacAthur was called back to active duty by Roosevelt, as war clouds gathered, and he remained on active duty until fired by Truman in 1951. So, all together MacArthur was on active duty about 45 years, or 49 if you include the four years at West Point.
