In 1804 Toussaint Charbonneau was interviewed to interpret Hidatsa for the Lewis and Clark expedition, but Lewis and Clark (esp. Clark) were not overly impressed with him. However, Sacagawea his wife spoke Shoshone and Hidatsa, so they hired Charbonneau on November 4, and he and Sacagawea moved into Fort Mandan a week later. Sacagawea was 16 or 17 at this time. She was with the Corps of Discovery until they arrived back in St. Louis on September 23, 1806.

No, there were two other women, and three children, who joined the expedition for the last month of their travel back to St. Louis. They were Yellow Corn, the wife of the Mandan Chief Sheheke (Big White), and their child; and the wife of the Mandan interpreter Rene Jessaume, and their two children. They joined the expedition at the Mandan-Hidatsa villages on August 17, 1806. Sacagawea, her husband, and little boy stayed at the villages because they had returned to their home. The new party of five went to Washington to meet President Jefferson.
