The first notable retaliation on the part of the United States was the Doolittle Raid which occurred on April 18th, 1942.
It targeted the Japanese home island of Honshu and although it did relatively little infrastructure damage, it shocked the Japanese and terrified their population because the belief had been that the United States presence in the Pacific had been destroyed, yet there were bombers overhead in the heart of Japan that were dropping bombs on major cities.
It sent shock waves through the empire of Japan, and caused immediate alarm and change of wartime policies for Japan, completely altering their war strategy moving forward.
I've added a link to a brief overview of the Doolittle Raid to the bottom of this question.
they sunk are ships and we attacked them
They bombed pearl harbor. It was attacked in Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 by Japenese bombers and planes.
You have some serious reading to do. Pearl Harbor did not attack Japan. The US Naval Base at Pearl Harbor HI was attacked by the Japanese on Dec 7, 1941. The American ships were tied up at their morring points in the harbor, and there had been no declaration of war. This was an unprovoked attack by Japan on the United States.
Pearl Harbor was attacked December 7th 1941. Congress then declared war on Japan December 8th 1941.
Japan thought that the US was going to attack them so Japan attacked us first even though we were not going to attack them. And pearl harbor ended when Japan ran out of planes on there carriers.
