"Drill Instructor" is a term specific to the US Marine Corps. Marine basic was shortened from 13 to nine weeks during the war. Two weeks of that were spent on the rifle range. Unlike soldiers in the Army however, few Marines had to join a unit while it was in combat. Replacements were usually taken on after a campaign was completed, so there was time for further training before the next operation, to integrate the new men and develop teamwork. Tarawa for instance lasted under four days. Both Iwo Jima and Okinawa, the two 1945 battles, each involved three divisions of Marines, six divisions being all there were. Iwo Jima lasted six weeks, and Okinawa, which actually invloved more US Army troops than Marines, lasted about 12 weeks.
