it depends on how and where you drive

(inproved answer)Old style solid rotors, or brake disks, as we call them in Ireland can last the lifetime of the car provided you are carefull not to damage them. Damage usually occurs when the friction material gets worn completely away from the pads causing the metal backing plate to contact the metal rotor.A loud grinding noise can be heard and you should nurse your car home at a low speed and brake very gently, get new pads a.s.a.p.This is a d.i.y. job if you are brave and have tools, and a manual if you are new to amateur mechanics.

A lesser kown cause of rotor damage is warping. This is when the rotor bends slightly and a vibration is felt upon braking. overheating is the main cause of this.Imagine you are driving down the road and the lights go red so you brake, come to a stop and sit there waiting for them to change with your foot on the brake. The rotor cools down unevenly now because most of it is exposed to the air while some of it remains at a higher temp. because it is been held between the brake pads ! The resulting expansion and contraction causes warping.Take your foot off the brake when you are stopped !Put the trans. in park instead.

Modern rotors are of the vented type and can be ruined by the same methods. However the side walls are thinner and may need to be replaced or ckecked around 100k.If there is enough meat left on a damaged rotor it can be skimmed by a precision machine shop to renew its flatness. Yhere are plenty of perfect ones to be found in car junk yards though. Also a diy job for the amateur enthusiast. Ive seen old style solid rotors last 250k miles on properly looked after cars.

How many miles before you should change your rotors?

As long as your rotors are not warped, or you have not let the brake pads wear to the point they defaced the rotors, there is no need to change them. Just install new brake pads. Rotors can last the life of the car.

How long do brake pads and brake rotors usually last in a 2003 Acura MDX?

No way of telling. It depends on the driver's habits and if it's city miles or highway miles. They may last 15K or 75K miles.

What is the average life span of rotors and brake pads on a 95 Ford Probe?

The disc brake pads usually last 40,000 to 50,000 miles under normal conditions. The rotors should last for 2 brake jobs unless they have been run metal to metal.

Why replace brake rotors?

Brake rotors are subject to a lot of heat and wear. After a period of time, they warp and have to be "turned". turning the rotors actually makes them thinner so they won't last as long as they did. Everytime they are turned, the thinner they get. There is a point where they are too thin to safely use. That point is stamped on the rotors and it is illegal for someone to turn past them that point. Rotors are not expensive and your brakes are the most important part of your car. I wouldn't skimp on my brakes.

The new pads will last longer, work better, and be quieter if the rotors are resurfaced.

What are brake calipers?

Brake calipers are the hydraulic devices that wrap around the rotors and pinch the brake pads into the rotors when you stop.

What is average life of Mercedes brake rotors?

If you are worried about that, then you probably should buy a honda.ANS 2 -With average driving and changing pads as soon as required, I would expect Mercedes rotors to last as long as the car (or at least 20 years.)

What makes car tremble when braking?

This is not much information, but I'll give it a try. If the front brake rotors have too much run-out, "wider in some spots than others" then the rotors need refaced or replaced. If the problem is in the rear brakes, the brake drums are out-of-round and need resurfaced. If you feel the tremble in the brake pedal when you brake, then the problem is certainly in the brake system. ------------ He is correct...the rotors are probably warped. Replace the rotors if they are warped that bad. You can get them turned but they are going to be thinner than new rotors and whatever caused them to warp last time will happen faster. (heavy braking and riding your foot on the brake can cause the rotors to warp)

What causes a warped brake rotor?

Excessive or heavy and continuous braking may warp brake rotors. Braking hard (heating the rotors a lot) and then going through water (which quickly cools the hot rotors) may also cause the rotors to warp. If the brake pads or brake rotors are getting thin, the rotors will warp more easily.
