Fish usually live different life spans depending on which type it is, but if the fish is kept healthy then it can live a very very very long time. Some fish can live up to fifty years! If you are talking about a goldfish then the usual life span if it dies of old age of course, is about twenty to thirty years, occasionally forty. If you want to know about a Betta fish then it usually lives about ten to twenty years. Any other tropical or usually domestic fish then I'm not quite sure about but those are the most popular breeds of fish as far as I know and that is what I am sure of.

If you choose the wrong fish, add too many or do not cycle the tank, not very long. A five gallon is very small and not suitable for many different fish. Below are some interesting stocking options. Make sure you cycle the tank before you add fish. * A single male betta. * Four or five female bettas. * Sparkling gouramis * Three guppies or three platies - either all male, all female, or one male two female. Mollies and swordtails grow too large. * Four or five ember tetras. * Four zebra danios. * Five neon tetras. Sometime fish live depending on how clean your tank is and if there are too many fish.

if its a goldfish mine died in an hour (long story) look in "do fish slant when they are dyeing" for the story but most can live for up to a year or two or three if happy and looked after well. Sorry but I cant find about any other fish;

When the tank is filled it will not be to the brim so it will only hold about 3.5 or at most 4 gallons. Your tank will hold a maximum of 3 inches of fish provided you follow the rules . The basic rules of fish keeping state 1 inch of fish needs a minimum of 1 gallon of water. Every tank needs a permanently running cycled filter. Every tank need at least 50% of its water changed every week. Follow those rules and your fish stand a chance of survival. Fail to follow those rules and I can guarantee failure.

Also a 50% weekly water change is in excess of what is needed if properly filtered and can actually cause more harm than good by removing too much of the good bacteria and resetting your tank cycle. Unless over stocked 25% a month on most species is acceptable amount to remove waste and add back depleted levels of chemicals.

A general rule could be considered to be 1 inch of fish per gallon regarding freshwater. I however would not recommend a 5.5 gallons tank for more than 1 fish, except perhaps for freshwater shrimp or a Betta.

The issue is that schooling fish feel more stressed when alone or in a small group. And in a 5 gallon tank, small schools (typically 4-5 fish) are pretty much the maximum you can have unless you want to risk an ammonia spike.
