10-15 years is a good place to start. Can last longer with regular brushing and flossing. If you grind your teeth much less than that. Be sure to wear a night guard to protect if you do grind. They can be replaced with little more additional grinding of the structure tooth.
I had a similar experience with my Windstar - lots of pad material left, but still grinding after new pads & shoes. Turns out the rotors were bad. :( Btw, I just replaced the rotors without finding out if a simple turning would have eliminated the grinding.
I have found the easiest way to replace the sidemarker lights is actually from underneath the vehicle. I you can get the bulb out from underneath, with a squeeze and a twist, the bulb can be replaced without removing the whole assembly.
