Most EU countries no longer have passport controls on their borders - the controls are only at the borders of the EU itself. Being an island, however, the UK does. So you will discover that you can travel freely and without needing to show your passport, until you return through UK border controls.
It is, nevertheless, always advisable to carry your passport as it's the UK's form of accepted identity in other countries.
