It can take 2-5 years. Don't worry though. I know you might have the urge to just pop in some popcorn or gum in, but gum, popcorn, caramel, all those sticky, hard things, you should best keep it out of your mouth. If your braces come loose, it will take a long time to get it fixed and it can make you have to keep your braces on longer. Then you'll just regret ever putting that into your mouth. On the other hand, if you just patiently wait for your teeth to get fixed and your braces to be taken off, you'll realize how much faster it can be. Braces can look rather cool too, so don't worry about people laughing at you. Just worry about brushing and flossing regularly. You should brush about 2-3 times night and day. Be sure to brush after every meal. Food can get stuck in between your braces. You don't want to be looking like a complete fool. Just remember how nice your teeth will look after you get your teeth fixed! :)
