Some of the best engines ever created were 6 cylinder. I've heard of some Ford 300's going over 300k easily... Though to do this the engine must be rigorously maintained and driven in a generally economical fashion without revving too high or low very often.
I forgot to say that I'm assuming you are talking about a straight 6, as apposed to a V6 engine which will usually last at long as an average V8.
