5 million years

I don't know where that person found that answer, or to which erruption it refers, but according to http://www.volcanolive.com/khaybar.html "volcanic activity began at Harrat Volcano 5 million years ago and has continued up to the present. Seven post Neolithic eruptions and eight historical eruptions have been identified at the volcano."

This was not a continuous or near-continuous eruption, but 12 distinct events spread over 5m years.

If continuous eruption's what you're looking for, then according to the Geological Society of America (2005, August 10). India's Smoking Gun: Dino-killing Eruptions. ScienceDaily. The Deccan Traps may have erupted fairly continuously for 30k years.

it varies with every volcano, with shield volcanoes the lava is non-viscous and runny, so the eruptions are non violent and frequent. One volcano on Hawaii has been erupting non stop since 1980 and they others can erupt monthly, or every few years. A composite volcano has viscous, thick lava, so pressure has to build over years until it explosivey erupts, this is infrequent and occurs maby every 100 years, some even more than that. These eruptions could take place over a number of days or weeks but may produce ash and gas many months after its eruption.

Calderas are the most explosive and the most infrequent, but easily the most dangerous because the magma is under intense pressure.

Hope this helps :) X
