The seeds can develop into bulbs that produce a small flower in three years if you tend them carefully and have them growing in good soil. Generally, you can depend on having flowers after four years. Don't have any weeds growing in the area you plant the seeds because they they look like sprouts of grass when they start out - so you don't want to mistakenly pull them out.

What happens when a daffodil blooms?

The daffodil gets its food through photosynthesis. When the plant has leaves, it is making its food through the interaction between chlorophyll in its leaves and sunlight. It uses this food during the flowering process and stores some of the food in the bulb underground. The following year, the bulb will use this food to send new shoots up through the soil to develop a new green plant.

What is the leaf size of a daffodil?

Daffodil leaf size depends on the age and nutrition of the bulb. They are generally thin, long leaves of about a 12-18 inches in length. Feeding them too much nitrogen will increase the length of the leaf, but inhibits bloom production. It is important to allow the leaf to turn yellow/brown after the plant blooms, so as to allow the production of food (sugar) that is stored in the bulb for the next year's growth and flowering.

How long does it take a daffodil plant to produce flowers?

When a daffodil sprouts and puts out leaves, stem and finally a bud depends entirely on the soil temperature. There is no set germination like you would find with summer annuals or veggies in your garden. Once the bulb starts to produce vegetation, it takes about 20 days before you get the bud and possibly a flower.

Why does daffodils have long bendy leaves?

Daffodils have to compete with its neighbors for available light, and it needs as much light as it can get to make food for the plant tissues and have enough left over to store in the bulb for next year's plant. The best way to do this is to have leaves that are long and flat to catch as much light as possible and not shade the neighboring daffodil leaves in the process.

What is the name of the reproductive organ of the daffodil?

The daffodil has two reproductive systems. The bulb performs asexual reproduction by growing offshoots or bulbets that are clones of the parent bulb. They will always breed "true" since they are clones. The flower is the sexual portion with an ovary, egg and sperm. Though it is not as efficient as the bulb for reproduction, it does guarentee genetic variablity and the ability to adapt to changing conditions over a long period of time.

If you put a rose and a daffodil in a closet which one could live longer?

If you are talking about a cut rose and a cut daffodil in a vase of water, the daffodil will outlast the rose definitely. If you are talking about plants, the rose is a woody perennial and it will continue to live as long as it gets some water and maybe a little food. The daffodil is an herbaceous perennial and might last a month in the closet, but before the rose looks really bad, the daffodil will be nothing but withered leaves and a starved bulb.
