Excellent question with a lot of "depends on" answers: What kind of tree? Some season quicker than others. Oak takes a long time (up to to 2 years in the best of conditions) while maple is much faster. Has the tree been lying on its side on the ground the whole time. if so, it may be rotten as the tree will lay in the wet ground and not season at all, but rot away. Has the tree laid in the forest in the shade or out in a field in the sun? Was it cut up at all, say into sections. The best answer is that, if you want dry wood, you need to cut it up and split it and season it for almost the same amount of time as if it were cut down yesterday.
