When do you change water pump?

If the pulley wobbles or coolant is leaking out, it's time to change the pump. Or, if you have a vehicle with a timing belt and it's time to change the timing belt, you may actually save money in the long run if you change the pump at the same time since most of the labor is already done with the belt change.

Is replacing a timing belt really necessary and what percentage of cars actually have problems with timing belts?

I have 1999 Hyundia Accent and I was told my timing belt may need to be replace because its over 100k miles on it. and Its driving real good and I have good mileage. Do i need to replace a timing belt? Belts stretch for one thing and for another, the cogs on timing belts wear out. Your car will have slop in timing and this means, though it might seem to be functioning OK, it's not because the timing of spark and fuel injection in each cylinder is not precise anymore. If you leave it long enough, the timing gears might jump a cog or two on the belt and this will cause misfiring and possible damage to your engine. So play it safe and change the belt according to the Hyundai recommendation.
