This depends on your carrier. I'm uncertain about how long all the carriers hold them. All I remember is that Verizon Wireless holds onto them the longest - 48 hours. Then all of them are purged from the system.
However, if you have AT&T and the message hasn't been delivered, it can remain active up to 72 hours (meaning if they don't have there phone on for longer than 72 hours they won't ever get it)

Reps have declined to answer this question. However there has been court cases that show Verizon has text messages on their servers for 14 days max. However a rep stated that they only keep them for 48 hours. Even if a warrant is used if they retrieve the message they will only store it for days not weeks. Truly they don't disclose actual info on this subject. And I wouldn't trust nothing from anybody. Pretty much anything through a mobile devise is traceable. The only way I would mess around an feel good would be to find a store with no cameras. And buy prepaid with cash. No name.
T-Mobile does not store text messages. Verizon is the only carrier that stores text messages and it does so for about 5 days.
240 hours
