The Trans-Siberian is a limited express and does not stop at all stations.
Stops at the stations it where it does stop, fall into three categories.
1. Long enough for passengers to embark and disembark - 1 to 5 minutes.
2. Minor maintenance and checks - 6 to 12 minutes.
3. Servicing, supplies and top up of water and fuel and change of crew - 13 to 20 minutes or longer.
Travellers often get a paper with their tickets indicating the stops and duration of the stops.
Depending on what is going on in Russia, some stops may be significantly longer for security purposes.
The same applies to the Trans-Manchurian and Trans-Mongolian trains which share the tracks from central Siberia to Moscow.

From JFK, take the "Air Train" to Jamaica Station. There, you can catch the LIRR (Long Island Railroad) into Penn Station in Manhattan. From Penn Station, you can catch an Amtrak train upstate to Albany.
