How long does the glow plug light stay on the dash for mine turns off after a second and wont start?

It would depend upon what vehicle you are talking about and the ambient temperature. But it sounds like it is not staying on long enough, if you can't get vehicle to start. The ones I'm familiar with usually are on for about 15 - 30 seconds.
