Mount Kilimanjaro is a volcano formed from several eruptions over the last 2 million years. The earliest may have been as early as 1.5 million years ago, resulting in the volcano now represented by the Shira summit on the W-NW side of the mountain. This was followed by the growth of the volcano marked by the sharp point of the Mawenzi summit to the SE. The latest eruptions, ending about 360,000 years ago, formed the concentric calderas of the Kibo summit, whose highest point is the Uhuru Peak.
Though dormant, Kilimanjaro still experiences release of steam from the caldera and vents.
