Lent is the period of time between Ash Wednesday and Easter Sunday. Lent is supposed to be 40 days, in honor of the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus was in the desert.
Violet is the liturgical color used throughout Lent. However, on the Fourth Sunday of Lent (Laetare Sunday) the liturgical color rose is allowed to be used.
Yes. Celebrated before Easter. It is a time of preparation for what is to come; the death of Our Lord on the Cross.
I wish I knew
A season of Lent is a long event from the ash Wednesday to Easter Sunday.
The Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Catholic) churches are the two main branches of Christianity. The Eastern Church is composed of national churches that are in communion with the Patriarch of Constantinople, while the Western Church is under the jurisdiction of the Pope in Rome. The two churches have different theological traditions and practices. The main differences between the Eastern (Orthodox) and Western (Catholic) churches are: -The Eastern Church uses the Byzantine Rite while the Western Church uses the Latin Rite. -The Eastern Church is organized into Patriarchates while the Western Church is organized into Dioceses. -The Eastern Church teaches that the Bishop of Rome is the first among equals while the Western Church teaches that the Bishop of Rome is the supreme Pontiff. -The Eastern Church is composed of national churches while the Western Church is composed of local churches 678217.
Lent for Western Christians (Catholics, Protestants) ends on 22 March, since 23 March 2008 is the Western date for Easter. Lent for Eastern Orthodox Christians starts on 10 March and ends on 26 April, since 27 April 2008 is the Orthodox date for Pascha/Easter.
Yes. Lent is over 6 weeks long, so people will go to church often during Lent.
Baptists do not follow a strict liturgical year. They do have Christmas ,Easter, and so forth. They do not follow saints' days and a long 40 day lent like many other churches.
40 days
Lent lasts for forty days and unlike similar fasts last through the nights as well. Sundays are not counted in the forty days as each Sunday is seen as a celebration of the resurrection (like mini-Easters) anyway. Lent ends the Saturday before Easter Sunday. Good Friday is a fasting day anyway. Eastern churches start Lent on the Monday of the 7th week before Easter and end it on the Friday 9 days before Easter. Eastern churches call this period the 'Great Lent'.
Shrove or Carnival Tuesday is the last day before the long fast for the Lent period in many Christian churches. The day is the day before Ash Wednesday and usually falls between February 3 and March 9.
Eastern Rite and Western Rite churches are not limited by geography. The naming is a convention that indicates where they historically started. You can find Eastern and Western Rite churches all over the US. There are Byzantine (Eastern) church in Fort Wayne as well as many western rite.
