There is not really an exact number of hours it varies per doctor.

I work for 6 doctors and they all work different schedules some days they have short days sometimes they have super long days.

It really just depends on what they have going on for the day. Here is an example of one of my docs schedules.

*Clinic means he is in the office seeing patients.

Monday: Clinic 8:30 - 12 am; surgery from 1- 4.

Tuesday: Surgery from 8 - 4

Wednesday: Surgery from 8- 12; Clinic 1:30 -4

Thursday: Clinic 8-4

Friday: Clinic 8- 2

This not taking into account that he also is "On-call" at the hospital and needs to do rounds at the hospital and sometimes is called during his time off to go in and see patients, and this could be at 2am on a Sunday or at 7pm on a Friday. There is no schedule for being On-Call, if the hospital calls he has to be there.

Answevaries. In residency about 12 is average now.As a practicing attending ( non-resident) 10-12 a day is probably about right. Thre is also usually call at night, which can vary from not too bad to hellish. This is usually non- compensated time, but comes with the territory. The average physician works 50-60 hrs a week, + call time.In today's dollars, taking in all the schooling and residency training, hundred's of thousands of dollars debt, and long hours, they make a decent living, but are not paid as much as you think.r

Most doctors, especially surgeons, can be called in at any time unexpectedly to do surgery or some other procedure. In 2006, more than one-third of full-time physicians worked 60 hours or more a week. It is difficult to clearly say the working hours of doctors, depending on which type.

That depends on alot. Who your working for, the boss might put you on a shift with more hours, or less. Also other things like how well you do, how much you make, and family. You have to make time for other things too.

Physicians who do shift work (ER, radiology, anesthesiology, salaried docs) tend to do eight hour shifts, although some do 12 hours.

In residency training, shifts can be as long as 36 hours - as long as there is a 24 hour rest period after that. Over the last few years, rules have been put in place (to minimize overly fatigued residents' tendency to make more mistakes) to limit the workweek to 80 hours maximum.

A normal shift for a doctor will depend on the hospital and the type of doctor. Typically doctors work at least 12 hours a shift with rotating days off.
