A US Senator must have been a citizen of the US as a natural-born citizen in order to become eligible for that office. In other words, people who are not born in the US cannot become senator.

Article I, s. 6 of the United States Constitution provides as follows: "...no Person holding any Office under the United States, shall be a Member of either House during his Continuance in Office." Once the Senator leaves office, of course, s/he is entitled to hold any office to which s/he is otherwise eligible.
