Venus does not orbit the Sun. However it does transit the Sun.It is very rare that a prediction is correctly made of when Venus will transit the Sun. Venus transits the Sun. However the next transit of Venus is thought to be on the 6th June 2011.
The transit of Venus is very easy to see. It is widely viewed, especially by scientists and astronomers around every century. The next transit of Venus shall occur in the year 2012 AD. -DATE: 15.6.11
Venus is visible most of the time if you know where to look. The only times it cannot be seen are when it's too close to the Sun, which happens for a short period (maybe a month) about every 9 months or so.
There will be a Transit of Venus on June 5/6, 2012, depending on which side of the International Date Line you're on. The best views will be from Guam or perhaps Japan on June 6; Guam often has cloudy weather.
It's called a transit and what you see is a small black circle crossing in front of the Sun as Venus. It takes up to 6 hours to move across. It can be seen by projecting the output from a telescope on to a white card. Never look through the telescope. Transits of Venus occur in pairs spaced by 8 years. The last pair were in 2004 and 2012. The next ones will be in 2117 and 2125. A transit occurs at inferior conjunction when Venus overtakes the Earth, passing in front of the Sun. Venus is at inferior conjunction every 584 days, but for a transit to occur Venus also must be at one of its nodes, when it happens to be crossing the ecliptic.
It will be 225 days between one 'full Venus' and the next. This is because a 'full Venus' only happens once in every orbit of the sun and it takes 225 days for Venus to orbit the sun.
A "transit" is sort of like an eclipse, in that another astronomical body crosses between the Earth and the Sun. But when the Moon does it, the Moon blocks out the entire Sun. In a "transit", the other body is so small, or so far away, that it doesn't block much of the light. The next "Transit of Venus" will occur on June 5, 2012. The last one was in June, 2004. There are generally two transits of Venus eight years apart, with the next pair occurring about 90 years later. The planet Mercury also passes between the Sun and the Earth occasionally; the next Transit of Mercury will be on May 9, 2016.Measuring the PRECISE times at which the other planet appears to touch the Sun provided invaluable information about the exact size and geometry of the Sun during the early observations. In 1769, the British Royal Observatory dispatched the legendary explorer Captain James Cook to travel halfway around the world to Tahiti, to measure the precise geometry of the solar system during the Transit of Venus.
The simultaneous occurrence of a solar eclipse and a transit of Venus is an extremely rare event due to the specific alignment required for both phenomena to happen together. As of my last update in September 2021, there are no records of such an event having occurred in recorded history. A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking the Sun's light partially or completely from certain areas on Earth's surface. On the other hand, a transit of Venus happens when Venus passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, appearing as a small black dot moving across the Sun's disk. The orbits of the Moon and Venus are not perfectly aligned, and their respective transits across the Sun do not coincide in a predictable manner. Transits of Venus occur in pairs with over a century between pairs. The last transit of Venus occurred in 2004 and 2012, and the next pair is predicted to occur in 2117 and 2125. Given the rarity of both events and the unique alignment required, it is highly unlikely that a solar eclipse and a transit of Venus will happen simultaneously in the foreseeable future. However, celestial events can sometimes surprise us, so astronomers and skywatchers are always on the lookout for rare occurrences in the sky.
