Czechoslovakia was founded after the end of the first world war in 1919. It stayed independent until 1938, when the Sudetenland was ceded to the Germans as a result of the Munich Peace Conference in 1938. Soon after, the Nazis took over the rest of the country in early 1939. Hitler rightfully assummed that the wester powers (France & England), would do nothing. After the end of the second world war in May 1945, their was compettion between forces allied to the Soviet Union and the west. The communists gained the upper hand by 1947 and installed a puppet government. They remained a satelite country under the direct control of the Soviet Union until Nov 1989, when the people overthrew the communists which became known as the "velvet revolution". In
1995, I believe, Czechoslovakia split up and there became the Czech Republic with Prague as its capital, and the Republic of Slovenia, with Brataslava as its capital. Today, both nation's are part of the European Union and have prospered under a free, liberal democratic form of government.
