According to Conway's All the World's Fighting Ships, 1922-1946 the Hornet was built as a "repeat Yorktown" and is listed with the Yorktown class as 770 feet long at the waterline, 809 feet length overall, and 827 feet 9 inches over the flight deck. Morison's History of U.S. Naval Operations in World War II shows the Hornet as its own class, length overall 809 feet 6 inches.Line drawings and photos of Hornet shows the flight deck is recessed from the bow but extends a little further than the recessed distance past the stern. Flight deck length is somewhere between 810 feet and 828 feet.

Unrelated but interesting is the fact that one of Doolittles fully loaded B-25B's could take off in 450 feet by the end of their training on a land based runway. M. Evans, California

James Doolittle led sixteen B -25 twin-engine bombers from the deck of what aircraft in the first bombing raid on Tokyo?

Hornet or Yorktown

What did Americans do after the bombing of pearl harbor to engage in the war?

Attacked Tokyo via the Doolittle Raid in 1942 (Sixteen B-25 Mitchells launched from the deck of the USS Hornet).

Doolittle flew off what naval ship?

The USS Hornet (CV 8). The Hornet was sunk later that year. Doolittle's Army B-25s were too big to get down on the hanger deck of the Hornet, and their wings did not fold up like carrier aircraft - they could not fit on the ship's elevators. This meant they had to ride to within launching distance lashed down on the Hornet's flight deck. With her deck covered with these bombers the Hornet could operate none of her own aircraft. Therefore she needed another carrier for an escort, in case they ran into Japanese carriers. The USS Enterprise (CV 6) went along to provide this air cover. The US had only three carriers in the Pacific at that crucial stage of the war, and risked two of them on this dangerous mission into enemy waters.

What was the USS Hornet?

There have been several ships named HORNET. The most famous one was an aircraft carrier during WW2. General Doolittle lead a flight of B-25 bombers who launched off the deck of the USS HORNET and attacked Tokyo as a symbol of defiance in response to the suprise attack on Pearl Harbor. See link.

Leader of the squad that first bombed japan?

I think you must mean General (then Colonel) James Doolittle. The "Doolittle Raiders" were sixteen medium bombers, B-25s, launched from an aircraft carrier, the USS Hornet. These were army bombers, much heavier than navy planes, and not intended to take off from a carrier. Carriers at the time did not have catapults to sling airplanes off the deck. The wings of these bombers did not fold like naval planes did, so only sixteen could be fitted on the deck, and none could be gotten down onto the hanger deck. Because the Hornet's deck was covered with these bombers she would be unable to operate her normal naval planes, and so had to be escorted by another carrier, the USS Enterprise. The US had only three aircraft carriers in the Pacific at the time so hazarding two of them on this mission was quite a risk to run. The mission is fairly well portrayed in the recent "Pearl Harbor" movie and was the subject of a much older, black-and-white film, "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo".The mission was on April 18, 1942. Little real damage was done to the four Japanese cities bombed, but the psychological effect was enormous, depressing the Japanese and giving a huge boost to American morale, only 4 1/2 months after Pearl Harbor. Colonel Doolittle went on to an illustrious career during the war, and was awarded the Medal of Honor for the raid on Japan.

Which Japanese ciy was bombed first?

US Army General Doolittle's "Raid on Tokyo" in 1942. Sixteen B-25 Mitchells (US Army) medium bombers (twin engined) launched from the deck of the fleet aircraft carrier, USS Hornet (later sunk during the battle of the Santa Cruz Islands).

What 2 Japanese cities were bombed by the US?

Tokyo by GEN Doolittle and his sixteen B-25 Mitchell Bombers launched from the deck of the USS Hornet in 1942 (See Film/Movie: Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo). See website: Atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. (These occurred in 1945).

In the Doolittle raid on Tokyo why couldn't the American planes return to the USS Hornet?

The Doolittle Raid was conducted with B-25 land based bombers. Planes designed to operate off of carriers would not have been able to carry enough ordnance to make it worth doing, and the carrier would have had to come far too close to Japan. Thus they came up with the crazy idea of launching large land-based bombers from an aircraft carrier. Although the B-25 could, just barely, take off from the carrier deck, they were far too big to land on it again. Even if they could have, though, the Hornet could not loiter for hours waiting for them to get back. It was far too dangerous. Thus the plan was for the planes to drop their bombs, then proceed on to China.

What is the Doolittle raid?

There was only one Doolittle Raid. Col. Doolittle was selected to lead a flight of medium bombers to attack mainland of Japan. The B-25 light bombers were modified so they could launch from the deck of a US Navy aircraft carrier. This attack was meant to strike at Japan in response to the attack on Pearl Harbor and was intended to bolster the morale of the US troops. The raid was almost sure to fail as the bombers could not return to the ship and could not even land on the ship. They were to continue flying to China and hope that they would land in territory held by the Nationalist Chinese. Some crews did survive. Some were killed when their planes crashed in the ocean. Others were captured by the Japanese and executed.
