The Scripture doesn't give an exact time but it must of been months or more. Consider that the words used for 'East' are two with one being as far away as modern Persia and that after Herod spoke to the Magi, he ordered the killing of all children under 2 years of age - taking into consideration the timing they 1st say the star in the East and began to follow on camels, probably in a caravan for safety.

Matthew 2 tells about the wise men comming to see Jesus in Bethlehem. The wise men talk to King Herod and tell him they are looking for the saviour. Herod tries to trick the wise men into revealing where the saviour is but the wise men are warned in a dream and don't see Herod again. Herod realizes the wise men have tricked him and so he plans to kill all male children under two years old. Joseph is warned in a dream and him and Mary their son go to live in Egypt until Herod dies.

Herod's only evil desire was to find this Child and kill Him. However, the Wise men were divinely warned by God in a dream not to tell Herod, and so they departed to their own country on a different route. Not long after this King Herod had all children 2 years and under murdered.
