In the modernized world, there is now very little difference between the the longevity of a person with hemophilia and any other person without it. During the years prior to clotting factor concentrates, bleeding problems would often be the cause of death in people with hemophilia, leading to a shortened life expectancy.
Once the clotting factor concentrates emerged, bleeding was replaced as the common cause of death by Infectious Diseases such as HIV and Hepatitis C that were often in those concentrates. As of the early 1990s the clotting factors were being made safe through detergent washing and heat treatment.
With the clotting factors being made safe new infections of HIV and Hepatitis C are virtually non-existant in the hemophilia community. Except for individuals that were infected with one or more infectious diseases prior to the viral inactivation steps, people with hemophilia have virtually normal life expectancies.
Unfortunately, in many parts of the world , access to quality care is unavailable. Often people with hemophilia in lesser developed countries do have much shorter lifespans and/or see major joint damage and a lower quality of life. In such instances many individuals die in childhood, and those that survive beyond those years are frequently one serious bleeding episode away from death.
The median age for people with Hemophilia is around 65 years old. But they can also live a long, normal life just like anyone else.
Traditional Hemophilia is present from birth and throughout the individual's life. This is because the disorder is genetically linked and genetics are pretty much set at the time of conception. Acquired Hemophilia, which is much more rare, can begin at pretty much any stage of an individual's life. While being more common in older people than younger, any person on certain medications, people with liver disease, and a handful of other situations can develop acquired hemophilia. (Acquired hemophilia is not inherited.)
