The meristem is the location at which new growth of the shoot and the tips of a coleus root takes place. Mitosis occurs in the undifferentiated cells found in the meristem.
I like trains! :)
Gravity affects the root growth by a mechanism called gravitropism.
Cut the browned parts down, near the growth start spot. When all browned areas have been removed, water the plant while it is in the sink, allowing the remainder of the water to fall over the entire root base and then out. When drained, replace plant in its desired area.
Primary growth is when the stem or root of a plant gets lengthens, and secondary growth is when the stem/root gets thicker.

Root hairs are long tubular out growths made of root epidermis cells that form to increase the root surface. Root hair development consists of root hair initiation and tip growth.
A root's downward growth as a response to gravity is called positive gravitropism or positive geotropism.

Coleus cannot tolerate the cold weather, and so unfortunately if its too cold it will die, however if you want the plant to come back next spring, you can take 2 inch cuttings of the plant, making sure to take from the centre of the plant, not offshoots, then prune the bottom couple of leaves so you have at least 1 inch in the soil without leaves, you could also try putting in a glass of water as coleus will root in this also. Answer Sounds as if your coleus might have mildew.
Plant growth is regulated by chemicals within the plant. The Auxins are growth promoters responsible for root elongation.
In plants, phosphate stimulates root growth and helps prevent disease.
