I have done it in just under five days, but that was a no frills trip, only stopping to change tyres and perform vital body functions, starting before sunrise and stopping just on dusk using the inland route. A more realistic and relaxed pace with a bit of sight seeing and a bit more time in bed would be ten days. The actual distance is 2797 km, travelling via Cobar and Aramac. According to the RACQ travel planner, one should allow 35.5 hours of actual driving time to complete it. This does not allow for breaks.
About 20 hours

It takes around 10 hours to drive the 1015 km from Melbourne to Newcastle.
