Typically, a four year degree is required to become a fashion designer. Fashion design majors will graduate with a Bachelors of Fine Arts. However, you can graduate from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a two year degree, which would be an Associates Degree, and work in the industry. FIT originally started out as a two year college before becoming a SUNY state school.
There are some schools offering fashion design classes that aren't accredited colleges. I'd be wary of them. While they may be easy to get into, the industry does not look fondly on these schools and it will be much harder to get a job. Schools like FIT, Parsons, Rhode Island School of Design and Pratt are a few of the schools that have excellent reputations. Many designers hire exclusively from the schools they attended.
However, it is important to point out that many of the most successful designers today never went to design school and many did not graduate. Michael Kors dropped out of FIT and Donna Karan never graduated from Parsons.
