One or two days after the new moon, go outside and look west at sunset. The razor-thin crescent moon is sometimes called "Diana's Bow", because Diana the Huntress was the goddess of the Moon, and it looks somewhat like a bow bent almost double. Walt Disney used this theme at the end of the Beethoven's 6th Symphony element in Fantasia.

"New moon", as used in Astronomy, is technically the "no-moon" - when the Moon is closest (in direction) to the Sun, so that you can probably not see it.

When you see a crescent, perhaps 1 or 2 days after the new moon, the moon will set soon after. At most, you should be able to see the moon for 1-2 hours - depending how much leeway you leave in your definition of "crescent".
