There are two trains that travel directly from Chicago to California. The California Zephyr goes to Emeryville outside of San Francisco via Denver. The train leaves Chicago daily at 2:00 pm and arrives in Emeryville at 5:40 pm on the second day. You can directly connect to Amtrak Thruway Motorcoaches from Emeryville to either Oakland or San Francisco (there are four stops in SF.) You can return to Chicago leaving Emeryville at 8:55 am and arriving at 3:50 pm on the second day in Chicago. Alternatively, you can go to Los Angeles via Albuquerque on the Southwest Chief. The train leaves Chicago at 3:15 pm and arrives in Los Angeles at 8:15 am on the second day. The return train leaves at 6:45 pm and arrives in Chicago at 3:20 pm on the second day. By the way, even the Los Angeles is south of San Francisco, the trip on the Southwest Chief to LA is about 180 miles shorter that the California Trip to Emeryville for two reasons: 1. Los Angeles farther east than San Francisco 2. The California Zephyr "goes out of the way" by traveling north to Salt Lake City and Reno before coming back south to SF.
Yes, there are passenger trains that go across the country. Call Amtrak in the phone book or look on the web site. Cross country trains began in the mid 1800's with Chicago as the main hub for east and west travel.
There is NO passenger train service from anywhere to/from Las Vegas.
No you cannot. You either have to take a bus to Salt Lake City and connect to the California Zephyr or Kingman, Arizona and connect to the Southwest Chief.

Las Vegas taxi drivers have a notorious reputation for "long-hauling" passengers (intentionally taking longer routes to run up the fare.) There are TWO routes from getting from the Vegas airport to Strip hotels: the freeway and the city streets.Vegas cabbies will nearly always ask you whether you want him to take the freeway. This is a trap. "Freeway" sounds faster, but is ALWAYS the longer route. Vegas cabbies know this, but they know that passengers will almost always think the "freeway" is faster, and that as long as they ask first, they can't be accused of scamming their passengers. This is a well-known Vegas cabbie ruse. The freeway fare will be between $25 and $30. The city-streets fare will be between $13 and $20.
You can find that answer by calling an airline or airport.
He probably won't be while his show in Vegas is running.
