When I bought mine in June of 1986 at the San Diego Harley dealer, the owner said that the bikes were not available until just recently, were clasified as a 1986 1/2 year bike, they had no color option, only cream and red, and each dealership was granted one or two bikes to sell for the year depending on the size of the dealership. He had two. The original price was $9, 995. I traded in a 1977 XLH sporster with 60,000 miles on it. I bought the bike new for $3,000, was afforded a $3,000 trade in value, and two weeks later the bike went to Germany. I wish I still had that little sporty. On Softail models the main 30amp breaker is located on the plastic rear fender extension and the three 15amp breakers (lights, ignition & accessories) are located under the dash rearward of the speedometer.

To answer your question. The FL is a carrry over from the heavyweight models. "Heavyweight" models (not that most others are light) have enjoyed the FL suffix since 1941, when "F" indicated the new 74-inch Knucklehead engine of which the Special Sport version was designated "L".
